No matter whether you’re an avid hiker, biker, outdoorsman, or just want to prep for survival situations, this is the product that will turn contaminated water into safe drink. But how does it work? Is it really as good as people say it is?
Complex Filtering & Purification Technology inside Tube
You need to read this:
Created by Verstergaard, LifeStraw is a personal-sized bottle that’s about 9.25” long and about an inch around. The plastic outer shell has a string attached, so you can wear it around your neck. To use it, simply submerge it into the water source and drink just as you would from a regular straw.
In its early days, this brand used iodine to kill nasty contamination. But in 2012, a new version was introduced that uses mechanical filtration instead chemical. This eliminates any unpleasant tastes that the iodine created!
How does this mechanical method work?
Liquid is pushed through the tube that contains hollow fibers that are just 0.2 microns across. Essentially, this is a microfiltration device. Bacteria, dirt and parasites get trapped in the fibers, and the clean water passes through!
Keep in mind:
When you’re done drinking, all you have to do is blow out of the straw to clean it out. Now that you know how it works, how long can you expect it to last?
Amazing 3-Year Shelf Life
A single unit should be able to purify 264 gallons! That means each unit will last about one year before it needs to be replaced. But that’s only if you’re using it every day.
Normally, this product itself has a three-year shelf life. In other words, you can buy it for survival prep and store it for up to three years before you need to replace it.
6 Benefits vs. 5 Drawbacks I Was Able to Discover

- Won’t remove heavy chemicals or salt.
- Not practical to use it to filter cooking water.
- Not practical for purifying and storing your H2O.

The original personal water filter. This award-winning product can travel with you anywhere you go. Weighing just two ounces, this model is perfect for backpackers, hikers, travelers, campers and emergency preppers.
Keep in mind: It has no mechanical parts and doesn’t need electricity or batteries. Therefore, it is a simple, affordable way to clean contaminated liquids quickly and safely.
2. LifeStraw Go ($34.95)
This model uses the same technology found in the original lifestraw, but this option features a refillable and portable water bottle that lets you carry safe drinking liquids with you wherever you go!

Pay attention: This one is ideal for hikers, runners and backpackers who are always on the move!
3. LifeStraw Family 1.0 ($89.95) & 2.0 ($118.95)
The version 1.0 is a high volume filtration system that’s ideal for camping. Like other products on this list, it is lightweight and portable. It can purify up to 4,755 gallons of water. Contaminants that are trapped inside of the filter are removed through the red exit tap.
The Family 2.0 is the next generation that can purify up to 30,000 liters! That’s enough to supply a group of five with clean drinking H2O for up to five years.
Keep in mind: This is a tabletop system with a large dirty water storage tank and a safe storage container that includes a tap!
4. LifeStraw Community

Comparison to 4 Top Competing Brands
This brand gives LifeStraw a run for its money. Both are fantastic products, but Sawyer may actually beat LifeStraw for two reasons:
- Better filtering
- Higher purification capacity
It can filter down to 0.1 microns. Not only that, but it can also clean 100,000 gallons before needing to be replaced!
Pay attention: Another benefit to Sawyer is that it can be attached to regular disposable water bottles or hydration packs of the included drinking pouch!
Berkey produces a number of different products, but the Sport Bottle is the closest thing to LifeStraw. As you may have guessed, this is a portable bottle that will purify contaminated liquids.
It has a shelf storage life of 50 years and can be refilled 160 times before replacement will be needed (that’s only about 27.5 gal.). As you can see, LifeStraw has won in this department.
However, Berkey does filter out toxic chemicals, heavy metals, pharmaceuticals, sediment, and chlorine!
Keep in mind: This brand is still one of the most recognized names in water filtration, and their larger family of products (mainly the version called Big) are superior to LifeStraw. But they aren’t portable!
Most people are familiar with Brita – especially the company’s water pitchers. But it’s hard to compare this brand to LifeStraw mainly because the two are designed for entirely different things!
This competing brand is meant to filter tap water, while products we are discussing in this article are meant for liquids contaminated with bacteria or parasites.
Most Brita products won’t remove these. Only the Faucet version can remove microbes and reduce certain chemicals in your water!
Keep in mind: Unless you’re only looking to purify tap water, LifeStraw is definitely preferred option!
SteriPEN uses a completely different technology to purify water. Instead of using filters and chemicals to remove bacteria and parasites, it uses UV rays for purification. It’s the first and fastest device of its kind.
But here’s the thing – it requires batteries to run. On average, lithium batteries will treat 150 liters (39 gal.) of liquids before needing to be replaced while alkaline batteries will only treat 50 liters (13 gal.).
What is more, you’ll get about 8,000 uses out of it before the lamp dies out! Luckily, LifeStraw doesn’t require batteries and will filter 264 gallons of liquids before replacement will be needed!
Please note: One advantage that the SteriPEN has is that it can destroy certain viruses and cysts that the other filter cannot.
Negative vs. Positive User Feedback & Experience

What are users saying about LifeStraw? Just one quick search online and you’ll find thousands of positive reviews, but a few negative ones too.
- Positive – Just about everyone who’s ever tried it loves it. It’s compact, lightweight and so easy to use. It’s the perfect addition to any bug-out-bag, but if you’re hiking or traveling overseas, this is a great tool to have on hand when you need clean drinking liquids.
- Negative – One thing that users did note is that it can take quite a bit of suction to start and to keep the water flowing. If you’re at higher altitudes, this can mean longer breaks to drink.
All in all, this is an affordable, easy to use and lightweight personal water filter that could potentially save your life. If you plan on spending time outdoors or traveling to countries with questionable water sources, the LifeStraw can ensure that you have safe drinking liquids at all times.
