  2. SOG Force
  3. Cold Steel SRK
  4. Becker BK2 Campanion
  5. Gerber LMF II
  6. Fallkniven A1
  7. Buck 119
  8. ESEE Laser Strike

  10. Ontario RAT-7

Model #1 – KA-BAR 7” Fighting/Utility Knife ($106.90)

Ka Bar Utility - Fighting Knife

Model specifications:

  • Material – 1095 Cro-Van Steel
  • Blade length – 7″
  • Thickness – 0.165″

There is a real reason the United States Marine Corps issues KA-BAR fighting blades to each and every single one of their enlisted men and officers.

They have been giving these ever since the World War I as this is hands down the very best model ever crafted and created by Ka-Bar.

However, for many it might be a bit on the big side. This model has following features:

  • Dual blade – Amazingly easy to sharpen (and of the highest quality steel available), you’re going to appreciate the 7-inch blade that comes with about 4″ of standard edge and 3″ of serrations – allowing you to cut through absolutely anything and everything that comes your way.
  • Large & heavy – The only real knock against this particular model is that it can be considered massive in size. After all, we’re talking about the version that is 11 and 3/4 inches long and weighs more than half a pound.

Most of the other solutions on this list are much thinner, but many of them lack the strength, durability, and reputation that this brand and model has built up over time!

Model #2 – SOG Force ($180.00)

SOG Force

Model specifications:

  • Material – AUS-8 Stainless Steel
  • Blade length – 6″
  • Thickness – 0.24″

This brand has been designed and developed from the ground up by a team of former special operations members. After all, SOG stands for Special Operations Group, and all of their products live up to incredible expectations!

Their Force model offers a 6-inch blade, making it relatively more compact as other products on this list (especially the KA-BAR mentioned above), but it is still a durable and reliable knife for survival situations.

  • Sharp & strong – Featuring a straight edge across the board (and a full tang that goes entirely through the handle), you’re going to be able to count on its professional performance times again – even if you don’t give it the kind of care and maintenance you should!
  • Great look – With a black matte finish, this tool has a slightly dangerous look to it!
  • Size – The biggest knock against this knife is that it is a little bit on the large side. However, if you are looking for a quality made “full tang” knife it’s hard to find more than two or three models any better than this one!

Amazingly affordable, you should be able to purchase SOG Force for under $100 (with discounts) all over the place.

Model #3 – Cold Steel SRK – Survival Rescue Knife ($134.99)

Cold Steel SRK

Model specifications:

  • Material – AUS-8 Steel
  • Blade length – 6″
  • Thickness – 3/16″

Search & rescue and survival operations are dealing with the difference between life and death on a regular basis. Therefore, all of the tools and technologies you will need to carry with yourself need to “pull their weight”.

This particular 6-inch solution offers more than you will need to get the job done. Some of the main features worth pointing out are:

  • Durable – Luckily, the Cold Steel SRK more than lives up to expectations. Not only is the 6-inch blade amazingly durable (and razor-sharp), but the steel that it has Black Tuff-Ex™ finish, so it holds its edge even after hours and hours of use.
  • Firm grip – You’ll also be pleased to feel just how strong and “grippy” the handle feels – thanks to black Kraton rubber used throughout.

This is a knife that can tackle almost anything and everything in your way. It’s also one of the cheaper versions available, coming in at right around $85 or so.

Model #4 – Becker BK2 Campanion ($127.52)

Becker BK2 CampanionModel specifications:

  • Material – 1095 Cro-Van Steel
  • Blade length – 5 & 1/4″
  • Thickness – 4/16″

With this option, you know that you are dealing with a blade that has been designed to withstand years and years of use (and abuse).

Why? Because the company that stands behind this model provides you with a full lifetime warranty!

This model has following features:

  • Medium length – That’s exactly what you’re going to be able to take advantage of when you use the Becker BK2 Campanion. This model has been engineered from the ground up to be the most practical wilderness knife out there, thanks to 5.5″ blade and 10.5″ overall length.
  • Thick – You’ll find out that this one is a little bit “fatter” than others – but that allows it to pull off different tasks that wouldn’t have been possible otherwise. What is more, you will be able to use it instead of various other tools due to its strength and durability!

The drop point also helps it to be more stable during “rough work”, giving you the confidence in your gadget even if you haven’t been using it all that often!

Model #5 – Gerber LMF II Infantry Knife ($108.00)

Gerber LMF II Infantry Knife

Model specifications:

  • Material – 420HC Stainless Steel
  • Blade length – 4.84″
  • Thickness – 3/16″

Though not “original issue” to any of the United States military groups, infantry members in the U.S. Army and Marine Corps have been taking advantage of the Gerber LMF II for some time now.

One of the more adaptable “fixed blade” solutions available that has just small enough of a footprint to fit perfectly on a flak jacket without getting in the way (while still being amazingly useful).

What is more, this particular survival knife is right up there with the very best models, with:

  • Partial serration – Offering a partial serration (as well as a straight edge), this version is useful in various scenarios. The dual combination allows for cutting through the rough material on one hand and also for “fine work” – however, there are other “extras” you can take advantage of.
  • Urban usage – There is a plexiglass punch included at the bottom of this model to break windows for urban survival. What is more, it can be converted into a spear or a hammer in an instant and included sheath comes with an integrated sharpener that you’ll be able to use to maintain its edge on a regular basis.

At just $65 (I was able to find discounts for this product online), it doesn’t get a whole lot better than this!

Model #6 – Fallkniven A1 ($380.00)

Fallkniven A1 Survival KnifeModel specifications:

  • Material – Lam. VG10 Steel
  • Blade length – 6.3″
  • Thickness – 0.24″

This is a kind of knife that is also going to hold its edge far longer than most other solutions available on the market right now due to the vanadium steel that is used throughout. It has been crafted in the form of a “modified” tanto blade.

This is making it amazingly useful in many situations where a straight version simply would not be as effective or maneuverable.

  • Better handle – The grip has been reinforced and encoded with a “non-slip” rubberized material, guaranteeing that it stays in your hand regardless of how much you’re sweating, how much rain or snow continues to dumb down from the heavens, and irrespective of whether or not you are wearing gloves.
  • Bigger – A definitely one of the bigger choices, the blade is 6.3″ long – and the entire knife has 11″.

Pay attention: A little bit on the expensive side, you need to expect to spend around $240.

Model #7 – Buck 119 Special ($93.00)

Buck 119 Special

Model specifications:

  • Material – Satin Finish 420HC Stainless Steel
  • Blade length – 6″
  • Thickness – 0.175″

As far as traditional knives are concerned, you’re not going to find a knife on this list with more history than the Buck 119 Special. The most popular fixed version for hunting, survival, and wilderness made by legendary American crafter Buck.

There is a real reason why generations of hunters, explorers, hikers, and those that just love the outdoors continue to turn to this model times again.

  • Traditional materials – Even though the blade is still crafted out of 6″ 420HC stainless steel (as opposed to other – and arguably better – steels available on the market today), you can rely on it to keep its edge when you need it most – provided that you have properly maintained it on a regular basis. You’re also going to appreciate the fact that this brand has included a full black leather sheath for storage, transportation, and comfort – keeping your knife (and you) safe at all times.
  • Universal usage – With a full straight edge across all 6 inches, you’ll be able to use this particular tool for much of the “fine” work you may have to take care of around camp – but it’s also large enough to tackle most of the “heavy lifting” as well.
  • Medium price – Often offered online for less than $50, you may not find a better model on the market right now.

An instant classic and since the moment that it was first created, this continues to be one of the top knives accessible year in and year out.

Model #8 – ESEE Laser Strike with Fire Starter ($188.00)

ESEE Laser Strike

Model specifications:

  • Material – High Carbon 1095 Steel
  • Blade length – 4.75″
  • Thickness– 0.188″

Anyone that has spent some time out in the woods knows just how crucial it is that all of your tools do “double duty,” so to speak. You’re going to need to bring stuff that can take care of a multitude of other things.

This particular knife is going to fall into that “multipurpose” category – just because it doubles as a fire-starter that you can use reliably in a pinch.

  • Regular maintenance – Sure, ESEE Laser Strike uses high carbon 1095 steel (the choice of high-end knives around the world) – and yes it will rust or stain if you don’t maintain it regularly – but there are so many benefits to using this solution that far outweigh the drawbacks.
  • Sharp edge – So long as you can properly lubricate and clean it on a routine basis, you’ll be able to count on a durable cutting edge that stays razor-sharp far longer than traditional steels would.

Lightweight, flexible, and one of the top currently available, for $120 or so as this is a bargain basement purchase you can rely on.

Model #9 – Smith & Wesson Bullseye Search & Rescue ($38.95)

Smith & Wesson Bullseye Fixed Blade Survival Knife

Model specifications:

  • Material – 440C Steel
  • Blade length – 5.88″
  • Thickness – 3/16″

Legendary arms manufacturer Smith & Wesson has been diving headfirst into the world of knives for some time now. Their Search & Rescue version of a survival blade has to be their best offer to date.

Before you will get your hands on it, here is some primary info you should know:

  • High quality – A fixed version that provides almost 6-inch cutting surface made of 440C stainless steel (with a total length of 10.5″), this is like a next generation KA-BAR.
  • Sturdy – Built in the same mold of the traditional fighting blade, this is the kind of “heavyweight” tool that you might need to call upon in any different number of situations – especially when your life or the lives of those closest to you are on the line.

For $20, you just aren’t going to find anything better than this!

Ontario RAT 7

Model specifications:

  • Material – 1095 Carbon Steel
  • Blade length – 7″
  • Thickness – 0.19″

Looking a bit like a “baby machete”, the RAT-7 version is more than prepared to do the bulk of the “heavy lifting” when it comes to life around camp or surviving in the wilderness.

It has a very sturdy blade, firm grip, and sharp edge. Here are some further features of this “baby machete”:

  • Dual edge – Offering a full 7″ straight edge blade on the front and a 2″ serrated one on the back, this doubles as a “camp saw” and a knife that can cut and hack through just about anything.

Though there are probably better knives available all throughout this list, if you’re looking for a budget based solution (that comes in at a cost of somewhere around $100 or less), this is a tool that you can rely on while moving forward through the wilderness!

  1. I own the Gerber and have used it often. I do like the look of that Buck knife though, does that come in a blacked out version?

  2. I have never had much luck with the smaller S&W knives but I have heard that the larger ones are made by a different manufacturer. I like the ESEE with the integrated fire starter. I am always looking for dual purpose equipment.
